Some experiences don’t just change our lives. They change who we become.

Still Fire Inside tells the story of four years that changed my life forever. It is a memoir of losing my husband, my daughter, my younger brother and a dear friend, and of trying to find a way of being in a world that no longer made sense.

Available in paperback and e-book versions.
Audio version coming soon.
French translation available in 2027.

Why I wrote it

Writing to understand, not to explain

For many years, all I could write were blog posts — short reflections capturing moments that might otherwise have slipped away. By the time I began writing Still Fire Inside, I had written more than four hundred of them, and I continue to write them today on my blog, Widowing Empty Nests.

As I gathered those fragments together, I realised they had been doing far more than recording events. Without ever intending to, I had begun re-storying my life. I wasn’t writing to explain a series of tragic events. I was writing to understand both my losses and myself.

Grief expressed itself as a kaleidoscope of emotions. Identity was shattered again and again, then painstakingly reshaped. Somewhere along the way, grief ceased to be an experience and became part of the fabric of my everyday life

If these pages offer anything, I hope it is companionship. Our stories will be different, but the experience of loving deeply, losing someone we cherish, and inhabiting a life that has been irrevocably changed belongs to all of us.

“Rather than telling you more about the book, I’d like to invite you into it.”

Widowing Empty Nests
Living with Love, Loss and Grief

The book began here — more than four hundred reflections written across the years this memoir describes, and still being written today. If you would like to keep reading after the final page, the blog continues the story.

Kind words from early readers

I’m deeply grateful to these early readers for their generous reflections.

“

“Emma takes the reader into the heart of the human experience, the co-mingling of love and grief. Her authentic vulnerability welcomes readers not only into her story, but also their own. What a gift.”

Michele Neff HernandezCEO & Founder, Soaring Spirits International; Author of “Different After You”
“

“Emma brings vulnerability and honesty to her writing, and she refuses to tidy grief away into something palatable and containable. In the midst of so much loss, this is a truly life-affirming celebration of love and loss, of suffering and growth.”

Sasha BatesPsychotherapist; Author of “Languages of Loss” and “A Grief Companion”
“

“Her words are beautiful, heartfelt, and provide a guide for others who are figuring out a way forward through loss. Still Fire Inside is the gentle hug and push that we all need to help us embrace life!”

Nancy Saltzman, PhDAuthor of “Radical Survivor”
“

“Still Fire Inside is the raw, powerful, unimaginable, painful, hope-filled story of life, love, death, rebirth and healing that Emma is living. Read this book. Pay attention to the messages that speak to your heart. Choose love.”

Tom ZubaAuthor of “Permission to Mourn” and “Becoming Radiant”

Continue the conversation

The publication of a book is the beginning of a conversation, not the end of one. I enjoy thoughtful conversations that explore the themes at the heart of Still Fire Inside and my wider work, including grief and bereavement, love and relationship, identity, belonging, leadership, organisational change, ritual, nature, microdosing, psychedelic-assisted transformation, and what it means to navigate life’s many thresholds with courage, curiosity and compassion.

I am available for podcasts, interviews, guest articles, literary festivals, speaking engagements, community conversations, book clubs, reading circles, and grief-informed leadership and workplace discussions.
